Arid zones are covering 20 % of the land masses (not including the polar zones). Again 20 % of them are covered with sand. The sandiest deserts are those of Australia, of which 50 % are covered with sand. The biggest sand desert in one patch is the Rub’ al Khali (empty quarter) on the Arabian peninsula.
The oldest sand desert is the Namib in Africa. The theories are varying, some estimate it to 1 million years. A sand art of gigantic dimension. In a desert you can get the feeling of a shifting landscape. Especially if you ever encountered a sand storm. The silence and vastness of deserts is so breath taking that it is said, desert is addictive. I strongly recommend to test it.
