What is sand?

In science all grainy materials (granulars) within a certain scale are called sand. It is determined in the Udden-Wentworth scale – you can google it. According to that, sugar, salt and other granular materials matching that scale are called sand.
The majority of the natural sands on earth have an average size of 1 millimeter. This also regards most of the sands you can find in deserts.
